New Recipes @ DrGourmet.com

It is Labor Day weekend and that means cookouts, picnics and barbecues. Whether you are hosting or have been invited, side dishes make the barbecue complete and here are some great, healthy, and familiar comfort food recipes for you to make.

My favorite of this is the Macaroni Salad. My mom made macaroni salad a lot when I was growing up. It's a great way to get veggies, fiber and makes the perfect side dish for taking to picnics.

Classic Macaroni Salad

You can use pickle relish if you like, but I like to use the small gherkins and cut them into small dice for this recipe.

Cole Slaw

This recipe was made by returning to original cole slaw recipes which were custard based and not made with a jar of mayonnaise. There are lot of recipes in older cookbooks that can be good for you.

Cajun Black Eyed Pea Salad

This is truly a Southern bean salad, with creamy black eyed peas and the zip of good Cajun seasoning. Tony Chachere's Creole Seasoning offers a salt-free version as does Chef Paul Prudhomme. This is great under a simple piece of grilled fish, chicken, or steak.

Three Bean Salad

Bean salad is the perfect summer side dish. It has veggies and great beans. Using a great oil like grapeseed oil makes this the perfect healthy summer dish.

Red Potato Salad

The waxy red potatoes hold together better in a salad than russets. Use Yukon Gold potatoes if you don't want the red skin. The larger red potatoes are easily peeled after boiling – the skins will generally just slip off.

Minted Cucumbers

I have loved cucumbers in vinegar since I was a kid. My mother made them very simply as peeled and sliced cucumbers (not seeded) with oil, white vinegar and a bit of salt and pepper. The mint was sprinkled on sometimes since it grew wild in our side yard. A taste of the South in the summer.
