What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disorder caused by a defective gene, in which unusually thick mucus builds up in the lungs and pancreas. The genetic disorder only manifests when a person inherits 2 defective genes, one from each parent, and is most common among those of Northern or Central European descent.

The disorder is usually diagnosed by the age of 2, with symptoms including slower growth, not gaining weight as they should, and lack of bowel movements in the first few days of life. The sweat glands may also be affected, making the skin of anyone with CF taste salty.

The increased mucus production in the lungs means that those with CF may have repeated bouts of pneumonia, sinus pain from infection or nasal polyps, and shortness of breath from the mucus in the lungs. Longer-term complications include male infertility and pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).

Diet

The enzymes created by the pancreas, which are critical to breaking down proteins and fats, have difficulty reaching the digestive tract, so those with Cystic Fibrosis have a hard time digesting their food and gaining nutrition from it.

Not absorbing nutrients and discomfort eating means many people with CF are underweight or struggle with staying at a normal weight, so their recommended diet is higher in protein and calories.

This difficulty in digesting fats can often lead to:

  • Greasy, smelly stools
  • Stomach cramps, gas or bloating
  • Flatulence

Supplements

Most people with CF need to take supplemental pancreatic enzymes in order to help their digestive system break down the food they consume. It is critical that you take the enzymes with every meal and snack, as directed by your physician. Over time these will help minimize the cramps, gas, bloating and flatulence, but more importantly, they will help you absorb the calories and nutrients you consume.

Vitamin supplements such as Vitamin K, A, D, E, and calcium may have been prescribed by your physician. Take them exactly as prescribed.
