Snacking

Consuming over 3,000 calories every day takes work, so those with CF should keep a supply of snacks with them at all times eat at least a few bites whenever you're hungry (at least every two hours).

This takes planning and making sure that you are ready with a great healthy choice.

Nuts are a great choice because they are healthier and have a lot of fat. Keep your favorite nuts on hand – pecans, almonds, pistachios, walnuts, etc..

Peanuts (which faithful readers of Dr. Gourmet know are legumes) are also high in fat and calories, keep well and go great as a snack.

Peanut butter - for the same reason - and keeping some of the new single-serving peanut butter packs on hand in your desk drawer or purse is a great idea. You can eat it right out of the package.

A good snack choice is trail mix, especially those made with dried fruit (high calorie) especially coconut (adds even more fat).

In a pinch you can have crackers or pretzels, but because they are highly processed, these are not as good a choice.

Individually-wrapped cheeses are a great portable way to get extra calories, fat and protein.

Full fat yogurts with added nuts and fruit for those with a sweet tooth.

Dessert

Dessert can be a great way to get extra calories. We've reviewed healthier frozen desserts you can get at your local grocery store. Read our dessert reviews »

Avoid Junk

Foods that are high in sugar are often low in nutrients, and when your body has difficulty absorbing nutrients, it's best to focus on getting as much nutrient bang for your caloric buck as you can. Don't waste your time or your pancreatic enzymes on junk.
