Last week I talked about popcorn and this week the "Eat This" is the same. That's because I found the 100 Calorie Mini Bags by Orville Redenbacher. The butter flavor is fantastic. Simple. Less calories, more fiber, good flavor. What more could you ask for?
In snacks, not much according to some snack makers it appears. A total of 6 other snacks were tested this week and the results are not encouraging.
There are three that are on the "Well, they're OK but not all that great" list this week. Personally, I think that life is too important to eat bad food and snacks should really be good. After all, there are a lot of snacks to choose from, so why choose something that's not so great?
I simply don't understand the Triscuit Thin Crisps. Triscuits are OK. They've got a lot of fat and salt, but they at least taste pretty good and have 3 grams of fiber. This new variety is a thin Triscuit (hence the name). They don't taste any different, they are not healthier, they have the same texture. A good, pretty bland, generic cracker that's thinner than the original.
Speaking of bland, it's no wonder that healthy snacking gets a bad name sometimes with products like Kellogg's All-Bran Multi-Grain and Garlic Herb crackers. These are just boring and are not redeemed by the 5 grams of fiber. The Multi-Grain simply don't taste like anything and The Garlic Herb tastes like a bad pizza parlor -- saturated in dried oregano. For something with a fair amount of fat and salt you'll be so much happier with a handful of nuts than a handful of these.
Really Don't Eat
It's amazing that a company like Kashi can make something as good as some of their frozen meals and make something so terrible as their TLC (Tasty Little Crackers). Neither the Original 7 Grain or the Fire Roasted Vegetable are at all tasty. Bland, dry and boring.
I have seen Stacy's Simply Naked Pita Chips on the shelf and avoided them. The bag is about the same size as one of the Mini Bags of popcorn fully popped. The difference is that the Mini Bag of popcorn is 100 calories and the Stacy's is 6 servings at 130 calories each.
It'd be different if you got something for all those calories (780 calories vs. 100 calories). You don't. Plain Melba Toast is better than this. These taste like a mouth full of white flour with some fat and salt. Ugh! Just leave them on the shelf as I had for so long.
