Making Croutons: Bread Types

Croutons can be any type of bread that has been dried in the oven, toasted or browned. I like these simple garlic croutons made with sourdough bread. You can use any kind of bread that you like, but the calories will vary depending on the type of bread that you use.

Likewise, you can use any spice or herb that you like. Minced shallot, onion or even red onion will work great in place of the garlic. I like a shake of garlic powder. Any fresh or dried herb will do as well.

If you are going to make a soup with some spice to it, sprinkle a bit of chili powder or cayenne pepper over the croutons.
