Ask Dr. Gourmet

Is macaroni & cheese healthy?

I have a question, what about macaroni & cheese. Have you done any research, since it's so much out there? I would like to know if it is healthy because the kids love it.

Dr. Gourmet Says...

Macaroni and Cheese

Macaroni and Cheese can be great for you and you are right - kids love it.

Some of it isn't so great though with a lot of artificial chemicals and flavorings. Many of the boxed products also use pastas made with white flour which isn't the best choice.

Making your own Mac & Cheese is the best option and here are two great recipes for healthy Mac & Cheese:

Creamy Mac & Cheese

Quickie Cheeseburger Mac

Here are some better choices for frozen or boxed:

Whole Foods 365 Organic Mac & Cheese (frozen)

Blake's All Natural Foods: Mac & Cheese with Chicken
and Farmhouse Mac & Cheese

Boxed Mac and Cheese: Annie's, Back to Nature, and
Kraft Whole Grain Macaroni & Cheese
