Ask Dr. Gourmet

What food scale do you recommend?

I just started eating healthier and thought it would be helpful to have a food scale. Can you recommend one for me? The one I have is a very cheap one and it won't weigh ounces very well. For instance ounces of lean turkey will not move the needle.

Dr. Gourmet Says...

Salter brand digital scale

I have used a variety of scales over the years and have settled on a digital scale. They are now relatively inexpensive (a good one used to cost hundreds of dollars) and are accurate to the gram. The scale I use presently (pictured) was under $40.00 at Amazon and is made by Salter.

I like it because the button to switch from ounces to grams is on the face of the control panel (rather than on the underside) and the broad base makes the scale stable when I put a larger bowl on top.

That said, there are tremendous values to be found. For a long time I used a mechanical scale similar to this one from Target at $12.99. For those on a budget it would be an excellent choice.
