Amy's does Mexican food pretty well, so it was nice to see a new product
from them. Their "Bowls" have been consistently pretty good so
I picked up their Tortilla Casserole & Black Beans without looking at
it too carefully. Amy's products sometimes do contain too much
salt, but when I got the packages back to the test kitchen I
noted that a single serving comes in at a whopping 780 mg. A
good lesson for you in that one should look carefully at the package. Something
that is seemingly healthy might very well have too much salt.
That said, this is an OK dish but you can taste the saltiness. The black beans are creamy and lightly seasoned while the tortilla and cheese casserole is savory and spicy (if also a bit salty). Unfortunately, we can't recommend this because of the salt content. It's a shame because with around 500 mg of sodium the meal would be delicious.
The Enchilada with Spanish Rice & Beans suffers from the same issue
(and so did I grabbing this off the shelf not noticing that it
contains 740 mg of sodium). Like the Tortilla Casserole you can taste every
bit of the salt in this dish. While that’s an issue, the seasoning of this
is just plain awful. There's far too much cumin and the flavor of the sauce
is bitter. One taster refused more than a couple of bites saying "that's
really terrible, just awful." The beans are gummy, the rice overpowering
and the sauce slimy. Not at all what we've come to expect from Amy's.
Their Baked Ziti bowl, on the other hand, is proof that you don't have
to have too much sodium in a frozen meal for it to be good. There's
590 mg in a single serving. Even at that level it tastes a little
salty but very tolerable. The tomato sauce is creamy and the
ziti are well cooked. The peas are tasty and not over cooked.
Often rice pasta can be gummy but these turn out well. At only
390 calories and 6 grams of fiber this is a pretty satisfying
meal.
The lesson here you can't always rely on a brand name for the food that you can eat. We've had some disappointments from Amy's and many of their foods are too salty - but not quite this bad. Go for the ziti dish and leave the others in the freezer.
