The first thing one notices about Chile is how much it resembles Southern California. The sandy clay soil and dry, desert foliage is so familiar and as one leaves Santiago headed south on the Ruta Cinco it feels much like driving north on the I-5 through the central valley of California. I love to visit the supermarket when I travel. I started this some years ago on a trip to England. I was amazed at the difference in foods that I found in grocery stores vs. those in the United States markets, and I thought it was an interesting insight into people's daily lives. As I wrote about a few days ago, Chile is very much an agricultural country. Twenty-five percent of their economy is based in farming, representing about four billion dollars of annual exports.
