Dr. Tim Says....

Timothy S. Harlan, M.D.I was asked recently about the relationship between diet and Alzheimer's Disease. This is a great question since we tend to focus on more traditional health benefits of eating well like heart disease, stroke and diabetes. This was in response to a recent study published in the journal Neurology.

In that research Swedish researchers looked at 8,534 twins over the age of 65. Thirty percent of those studied were overweight or obese. The risk of dementia was almost double in those who were overweight vs. those of normal weight. Alarmingly, those who were obese had almost a fourfold increase in risk. Eating Well and Memory

Featured Recipe

Ginger Peach Pork Chops

Peach JamThis sauce was inspired by a jam that my wife likes. The ginger peach preserves are tasty, but this sauce is much spicier with the fresh ginger flavor. I added a little extra ground pepper to give this even more zing, but you can adjust that to your taste.

Following the Just Tell Me What to Eat! Plan

Elaine HicksIt's the Sunday night before DAY ONE. I've read up to page 17 in Dr. Gourmet's new book, Just Tell Me What to Eat!, where it says: "A personalized [grocery] shopping list for Week 1 can be found at DrGourmet.com/shoppinglist." I had to stop there and find the grocery list given to me to by health science librarian Ruth Holst, president of the Medical Librarian Association and a cheesehead from rural Wisconsin. She has Wisconsin-like things on her list that I'm not going to use in New Orleans, like real butter and fire logs. I modified the list to incorporate WEEK ONE items such as Promise Buttery Spread, Papaya juice, and pinenuts and went to the grocery store. Before Day One
