Ingredients

Hot Bean Paste

Hot bean paste may also be labeled Chili Bean Paste or Bean Paste with Chile. It is a smooth red sauce made from fermented soybeans combined with hot chilies. It is usually extremely spicy and should be used very carefully. Many grocery stores will stock it, but hot bean paste is a staple in Asian markets.

In the Ginger Cilantro Flank Steak recipe I don’t use very much paste – just enough to be complementary. The final result is not very hot, but making it with two or three teaspoons of hot bean paste will really spice things up.
