Ask Dr. Gourmet

If I have gout can I eat Fiber One Cereal?

I want to know if Fiber One cereal from General Mills is OK to eat when you have gout. I need to eat it every day because I have Diverticulosis.

Also can I eat microwave kettle corn popcorn with gout?

Dr. Gourmet Says...

CerealCereals such as Fiber One shouldn't be a problem for your gout. We know that the main issue where food will affect uric acid levels are those ingredients higher in protein, especially ones that contain more purines. Here's more info regarding that:

One of the most interesting findings recently is that while some plant based foods are high in purines, it appears that this is less of an issue than meat protein.
