Ask Dr. Gourmet

Can I substitute two slices of low-calorie bread for the one slice of whole wheat bread?

Dr. Gourmet, I LOVE your eating plan! If I am on the "one lunch serving" plan, that means one slice of whole wheat bread. I've noticed that most whole wheat breads are around 100-120 calories per slice. Sara Lee Delightful 100% Whole Wheat Bread has only 45 calories per slice, so would two pieces of that bread count as one slice of regular whole wheat bread? It's hard to pack a lunch for work with one slice of bread without making it a half-sandwich, and if I eat half a sandwich, I'm still hungry!

Dr. Gourmet Says...

Sara Lee Delightful 100% Whole Wheat Bread

I'm glad that The Dr. Gourmet Diet Plan is working so well for you. You have a great idea using the Sara Lee bread that you have found. The goal for a lunch serving is a serving of bread that is about 100 calories, and you're correct that for most whole grain breads on the market today, that is generally one slice.

Two slices of the Delightful 100% Whole Wheat Bread are 90 calories and would make the perfect sandwich for lunch. The best part is that this bread has 5 grams of fiber and is still low in sugar.

Thanks for writing.
