I am on Coumadin 5 mg daily. I get a pt ptt blood test every two weeks. When the doctor gets the report quite often he has me to double up on my medication for one night. I eat a lot of salads minus the lettuce. Normally I put tomatoes, celery, green, yellow and red peppers and salad dressing. My question is, do any of these items or a combination have large amounts of vitamin K? Thank you.
Dr. Gourmet Says...
Most veggies have lower amounts of Vitamin K - under 20 micrograms (mcg) per serving. By themselves this may not be a lot of Vitamin K and might not affect your INR. All of them added up might, however.
You can find out the nutritional content of any ingredient by logging into the Quality Calorie Diet Planner and clicking the Food Diary tab. Add all of the foods you eat daily, including the salad ingredients, and the system will show you the amount of Vitamin K you're eating each day
The menu planning software also helps you create weekly menus that are safer for Coumadin users. Click the Weekly Menus tab.
