Ask Dr. Gourmet

How much Carbon Dioxide is in soda?

How much CO2 is in Pepsi, 7-Up and Mountain Dew?

Dr. Gourmet Says...

glass of soda

I love this question. Using a 500 mL bottle of Coca-Cola, I poured it into a 1 quart Pyrex measuring cup. My trusty stick blender with the whisk attachment provided gentle agitation to release as much of the carbon dioxide as possible. I then let the Coke sit for 12 hours, stirring it occasionally.

I used my very unscientific electronic kitchen scale. The result was a loss of 10 grams by weight. After the initial agitation, 6 grams of weight was lost. Now, I don't have the most scientific equipment, but that seems a fair amount of CO2 -- about the amount in the cartridges that I use for inflating the tires on my bicycle (they have 12 grams of CO2).

Thanks for writing.
